Trip to the Colony

Last Sunday we had the privilege of going to Chihuahua colony with Liz and Ramont. We got up at 5:30, packed the kids in the back of the vehicle on a mattress and headed out for the 2.5 hr ride north of Santa Cruz. We ate peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast and the kids got dressed just as we pulled up to the church.



The colony has a harvest celebration every year where they have special services and a huge lunch. There were over 800 people there, including many national Bolivians who work with the colony Mennonites.



The weather turned out to be quite nice, warmer than I anticipated with my wool sweater. Liz, baby Jonathan, the girls and I sat on the ladies side, Carl and Joel and Ramont with all the men. Though I didn't catch any of the Low German sermon (the announcements were spoken in Spanish though), I did catch some of the conversation Liz was having with some of the ladies afterwards.

We enjoyed the burgers, baked beans and chips for lunch. Talk about amazing serving that much food in such a short time. Of course, there was a ladies line and a separate line for the men. We stayed just to get some ice cream from the ice cream truck after the meal and then piled back into our vehicle. Though there was another two services in the afternoon, we decided on heading home. The kids all had a good time, we had a lovely visit with Liz and Ramont and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Maybe we can go again next year!
