Weekend Away

It doesn't happen very often where the kids have a day off school the same weekend that Carl has a weekend off from church. We had thought in February it would be fabulous to take the kids skiing mid-March. So we booked a hotel, checked out lift tickets and then this happened.

We debated whether we should cancel the weekend and just stay home since the majority of the activities Asha wouldn't be able to participate in. But after we talked to her and thought more about it, we decided to go ahead anyway. There was lots that could be salvaged and the weekend could be fabulous even with a change or alterations in activities.

Once we arrived at the hotel, the kids were excited about swimming. Asha was initially upset that she couldn't go down the water slide (there's no plastic bag that effective!), but soon was content bobbing around in the water with me and sitting in the hot tub. It actually was quite nice to spend some one-on-one time with her. I think she recognized that it wasn't all bad being the only one with Mom.

The next day we drove to the ski hill, a little apprehensive. We wondered if Asha would be able to ski or even if she was, if it would be a smart idea. The management told us that it was our choice if we wanted her to ski, and since she didn't need poles and would have a lesson with an instructor, we went ahead.

All of the kids had a fabulous day. The weather was amazing! Joel tried out snowboarding with his dad. Kezia got the hang of skiing right away and even went down some of the Green Runs by herself. Elena had no fear and made it down the bunny hill on her own without falling. And Asha had a blast on her skis. She figured out how to steer and stop and though there were a few minor falls, she managed to crumple down slowly.

Once the jackets were soaking wet and then the sweaters were damp, that ended our day, especially for Asha as I was afraid the moisture from her clothes would "melt" her cast. So at 3:30, after 6 hours on the hill, we drove back to the hotel. Everyone was tired and content.

Other highlights included candy purchases at Bulk Barn, sleeping in and of course spending 3 glorious days, just us as a family.
