Last March on our trip to Bolivia Elena had the unfortunate experience of breaking her collarbone. It was a bit of an ordeal, but thankfully we were familiar with the clinic and she only needed a sling. Sure, it meant our activities had to be modified a bit, but in all, it wasn't as traumatic as it could have been.
Fast forward 12 months and we are dealing with another break. This time Asha. She was at a birthday party at a gym club. Since being in gymnastics, she's pretty eager to try her skills. Unfortunately her attempt at a new skill with limited spotting by the instructor, who didn't know her resulted in a weird fall and a broken elbow.
She was such a trooper when I took her to the clinic and they confirmed the break. A week later we were told she wouldn't need pins and that a new cast would do the trick in immobilizing the elbow so it could heal properly.
Being her dominant hand, she had to modify all her activities and become a lefty for the month. She still went to gymnastics, but she did conditioning and worked on her skills that didn't require her arm. Her teammates were so supportive and Asha was glad she could still be there.
She could only wear short sleeved shirts and one jacket the entire time since the cast was so bulky. We were glad for a mild month!
Asha adjusted and did well for the 5 weeks. Now that the cast is off, she's hesitant to use it, but is slowly regaining strength and will work with a physiotherapist soon. It was nothing short of a miracle for Asha that the day she got her cast off was the day of her team pictures for gymnastics. There would have been no way her competition body suit would have fit over the cast. She was beaming!
Here's hoping to an uneventful March 2016!
